Sometimes, the history that an important player can have at a club is not reflected when he becomes a coach. They find it harder to excel in that world and may retire early, even though they may have the quality and knowledge to do so.

Ronald Koeman is following in those footsteps. As captain of FC Barcelona he managed to win the best trophies in Europe and everyone praises the fact that he was the captain of a team that revolutionised the way the game was played in the world, under the guidance of such a historic figure as Johan Cruyff.

But now, things have not gone well for him after hanging up his boots and being on the bench as technical director. He had a good run with Ajax Amsterdam in his early days until he became Eredivisie champion and also reached the top with PSV Eindhoven. But he has come up short in terms of results.

One of his blackest marks will be that, while he was coach of FC Barcelona, the departure of Lionel Messi to Paris Saint-Germain was announced. Despite the Argentine crack's love for the Catalan side, it was no longer sustainable to be in a dressing room full of envy, egos and pressures outside of football.

What happened to Koeman in the Netherlands?

Ronald Koeman is now the coach of the Netherlands national team. And he is not having a very good time in his return to the job. They lost the Nations League semi-final to Croatia 4-2 and this weekend they lost 3-2 to Italy. Louis Van Gaal had left the Dutch on a 20-match unbeaten run, and Koeman has just lost his fourth match in a row.
