Singer Elton John, honorary life president of Watford Football Club, which is competing in the EFL Championship this season, has given his blessing to one of the stadium's streets, which has been renamed Occupation Road to Yellow Brick Road.
The new Yellow Brick Road, a name proposed by fan Roy Moore and approved by the city council, is the street next to the stand dedicated to the singer, The Sir Elton John Stand, at the Vicarage Road Stadium.
Using Yellow Brick Road is a really fantastic and clever way for fans to help recognize a time when I was here almost every day; on this incredible journey with Graham Taylor, said Sir Elton John, remembering his time in charge of Watford.
The name Yellow Brick Road is related to the iconic song Goodbye Yellow Brick Road that Elton John published in 1973. The famous 76-year-old singer acknowledged that I am still excited because this is where I fell in love with football and my club. As he has said many times before, Watford Football Club has done more for him in his life than I did for him. You carry it in the blood; Watford was my father's team and, therefore, mine, noted Sir Elton John, who bought Watford shares in 1974.
When Elton John became president of Watford in 1977, the English team was the worst in English professional football, ranking 92nd out of 92 professional clubs. Elton John's decision to sign manager Graham Taylor and to sign players such as Luther Blissett, Nigel Callaghan and John Barnes (when he was 16) took Watford from being the worst team in England to the First Division to be second in 1981 , play in Europe and compete in the 1984 FA Cup final.
