A new era at Liverpool will officially start this new season. After the exit of Bobby Firmino and James Milner out of the team, Jürgen Klopp is looking to rebuild the team on the pitch, which he has already started to do with the arrivals of Alexis McCallister and Dominik Szobozslai to the squad.
However, rebuilding the team not only will consist of bringing new players to the squad, but also having new leaders at the Liverpool dressing room. In this sense, Firmino and Milner were two big leaders in the squad and their exit has brought the need of resetting the leadership in the team, a crucial matter at Liverpool, a huge club where everybody must follow the Red culture and principles to be able to face any challenge during the following few years.
Among the new Reds, club considers new arrivals McCallister and Szoboszlai have personality enough to potentially fit a leading role in the squad, while they also think Cody Gakpo, Darwin Nuñez and Luis Diaz could be soon prepared for it, as they have shown personality and talent to succeed at Anfield.
It is a current reality that Virgil van Dijk will officially step up to the role of vice-captain following Milner’s departure, and it will be interesting to see who, if anyone, is now added to the first-team ‘leadership group’, at the moment composed by Van Dijk, Andy Robertson, Alisson Becker and Trent Alexander-Arnold, with Jordan Henderson also on the list.
However, everybody expects Mohamed Salah to take the responsibility of being the club leader. After several years of service and having become an Anfield legend, everyone at the club and among the fans consider ‘The Egyptian King’ must also be a candidate due to his work ethic and his good connection with every player in the team.
