Manchester United’s current problems with his wingers are one of the most commented topics in the English football on these days, and it would have made reflect about the problems in the position experienced by the club, which seems paradoxically difficult to believe in an institution like Manchester United, where excellent wingers would be part of the club’s tradition and history.
It is worth remembering that the club has had great wingers like Ryan Giggs, George Best or Cristiano Ronaldo, alongside Andrei Kanchelskis, David Beckham or Lee Sharp, all of them excellent players who have been added to the club’s history breaking all kind of records and becoming really popular among the fans.
However, according to a report made by the English journal Daily Mail, in the last two decades Manchester United have really struggled to find good wingers, and the position has become something extremely problematic at the club, who has spent more than €400 million on wingers who have never reached the top elite level set by some Manchester United legends.
In this sense, and according to the Daily Mail information, since Ronaldo made his debut against Bolton as a fresh-faced 17-year-old player, Manchester United have signed 15 players for the position spending €433 million on wingers. Nani was successful at times but also frustrating as Ashley Young, while Antonio Valencia became a great performer, but as a full back. There were young players like David Bellion and Zoran Tosic not able to succeed or play regularly with the club, and Obertan, Bebe and Zaha ended being flops, while Angel Di Maria, Memphis Depay and Daniel James joined the club as top stars but they never convinced, and the duo composed by Jadon Sancho and Antony, the latest players not responding to the club’s winger tradition worth €175 million which now could be a waste of money.
