AC Milan legend Paolo Maldini surprised the fans and the media in the last few hours by making a shocking revelation on one of the most polemic players in the Premier League, who was part of the AC Milan when Maldini was acting for the club as a sporting director in the last few years.
The Italian retired defender, who spoke in an exclusive interview for the Italian journal La Repubblica, revealed some secrets of his career at the club, reviewing the days when he used to be the sporting director of the club few years after retiring as a player, role he developed until the last summer, when he and the club decided to part ways.
In this sense, the Italian legend spoke on the case of the Italian playmaker Sandro Tonali, who was signed from Brescia for €30 million in 2020, with Maldini having a crucial role in his arrival, being also crucial in the player’s posterior sale from Milan to Newcastle, where he was sanctioned with an eight-month ban from football activities due to his implication on an illegal betting case which he started in his days at Milan.
In this respect, Maldini went under the spotlight speaking on Milan's sale of Tonali to Newcastle, whom he wouldn’t have preferred not selling, and that would have been one of the main reasons for Maldini's exit from Milan. “We would have done everything possible not to let him go. We have never been against making a big sale but we didn't have to. For Sandro we spent 1/5 of the value and we argued with the CEO and the ownership: not even scouting wanted it", explained Maldini.
