After being a legend at Manchester United, becoming the goalkeeper with more clean sheets in United’s history, David De Gea's exit has really disappointed the fans. According to the British media, he had received a renewal proposal which he hadn’t signed, and when he decided to accept it, Manchester United resented the proposal, decreasing it drastically from his current £375,000-a-week salary, and waiting for the player to express if he accepted, but the contract expired and the player became a free agent.
In this sense, in the last few days we have been able to know some truth about what really happened in the negotiations with the players and some reasons that avoided David De Gea’s permanence at Manchester United.
According to the British media, David De Gea experienced a change in his role at the team, passing from being the main goalkeeper to a secondary role under Ten Hag management, as the Dutchman is looking for a goalkeeper who can help his teammates to break low blocks of pressure by keeping the ball possession for the team, characteristics he doesn’t find in De Gea.
While the Spanish goalkeeper was still negotiating with Manchester United and thinking whether to sign his renewal or not due to his change of role, the club decided to look for a new goalkeeper, giving Ten Hag the chance to sign a goalkeeper at his taste, with Andre Onana from Inter Milan as the main option.
In this sense, and following British media sources, when De Gea finally decided to stay at Manchester United, Erik Ten Hag and the club were totally immersed in the negotiations to bring a new goalkeeper, and the Dutchman decided not to count on the Spanish player, whose salary could have drastically reduced as at that moment he wasn’t a main option for the club anymore.
